Gosford on the New South Wales Central Coast has a major role in the greater Sydney metropolitan strategy, yet has languished as the other Regional Cities have grown. The Gosford Challenge was established in 2008 with the aim of revitalising Gosford and realising its potential as a world class, waterfront city.
Cox was employed by the Joint Project Sponsors – Central Coast Regional Development Corporation and the Gosford City Council – as the Design Partner to join a team that included supporting consultants, development experts and international community consultation specialists.
Unlike traditional master plans or city strategies, the Gosford Challenge was a community-owned growth and renewal plan that was formulated from the “ground up”. Not only did this approach effectively involve multiple agencies and authorities across all tiers of government, but the engagement process ensured more than 1,000 people from all sectors of the Central Coast community actively participated in the design and decision making process.
The final Gosford City Centre Master Plan, ‘Our City, Our Destiny’, was developed with the community over a 24-month period including a six-day intensive design Charette. The resultant master plan includes a spatial framework, key elements and networks and most importantly and implementation plan that nominates catalytic projects and the responsible authority facilitate the transformation of the Regional City for the next 20 years.
‘Our City, Our Destiny’, secured unparalleled community support winning the RH Doherty Award for Excellence in Communication. The RH Dougherty Awards aim to recognise and encourage greater understanding and communication by councils to their local communities.
As part of Our City, Our Destiny, COX also prepared the Master Plan, Public Domain and Development Controls for 6,500 new residential dwellings and 10,000 new jobs in Gosford City Centre.
