Putney Hill

Putney Hill infills an existing middle ring Sydney suburb, at the “missing middle” density advocated by the NSW Minister for Planning. The project features in the NSW Government’s most recent Medium Density Housing Code. The project was secured by winning a design competition held by Frasers. The site is characterised by a rich landscape, undulating topography, with steep vegetated areas. The master plan responds by a developing a series of places linked by a green spine with each informed by the particular character of that place.

A total of 791 dwellings ranging from apartments to houses have been constructed in six stages. Typologies include lower rise terrace houses on a ‘terraced’ landscape stepping down the site, a fine grain of semi-detached dwellings along the edge of the site adjoining existing low density dwellings transitioning in scale preserving the amenity of the neighbours including sunlight and privacy. The central precinct addresses the public park. The north west part of the site is the ‘hill’, with a series of apartments placed on a series of ‘acropolis’ platforms maintaining the existing hilly topography and vegetation.

A sensitively scaled domestic contemporary architecture has informed the planning of the dwellings and the strong relationship between inside and outside spaces. Balconies, terraces, pergolas add articulation to the architecture with building facades strongly modelled and articulated. The apartments are carefully massed and incorporate a range of finishes.
