Singapore EXPO is a major international project which was awarded to our practice as a result of the success of our Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, a previous national BHP Award of Excellence winner. It has thus demonstrated fully the benefits of receiving this award and application of advanced steel technology to future applications.
The project was won for Australia in a selected international competition from noted architectural firms such as OMA (Rem Koolhaas), Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Nikkon Sekkei and Weidelplan.
The series of six 10,000 square metre halls forms the largest exhibition facility now in the southern hemisphere, each 100×100 metre hall being entirely clear span and conjoined to form one interior space the size of 10 contiguous football fields.
The centre consists entirely of steel superstructure and cladding, supplied by a combination of BHP and international sourced steel. In particular, the entire 60,000 square metres of roof cladding and the equal quantity of insulated ceiling lining were supplied from BHP.
For interest in terms of innovation in steelwork, the roof structure of each hall together with its roof lining was designed to be lifted in one 8 hour operation following fabrication on the hall floor – a feat never before achieved on this scale but with enormous economies in time and capital cost.
