Richard joined Cox Architecture in 2001 and became a Director of the practice in 2007. He has three fields of particular interest and specialisation – mixed-use urban precinct renewal, cultural facility redevelopment, and sports and wellbeing facilities.
His urban regeneration projects include Cairns Cityport in North Queensland, the Ipswich City Centre redevelopment west of Brisbane, the Kings Square precinct adjoining Perth CBD, and the Green Square precinct in Fortitude Valley. The Newstead Riverpark development in Brisbane’s inner city is sentinel and includes the Energex Headquarters and the Gasworks retail heart.
He has long directed the refurbishment of the Queensland Cultural Centre, specifically the Queensland Museum and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and is project director for the Cairns Performing Arts Centre.
Richard has lead Cox’s ongoing commitment to the community through his involvement in Youngcare. Cox have completed three projects for housing young people with disabilities since 2005 and these represent leading thinking in the areas of design and policy approach.
His sports projects include the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and the Queensland State Velodrome, both venues for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. The Griffith Health Centre at the Gold Coast Campus of Griffith University is exemplary of Richard’s ability to resolve complex briefs into replete contextually-responsive architecture.
Richard is also a leader of our eCOX sustainability group.
