Brisbane International Cycle Park, Murarrie Recreation Reserve
Murarrie, Brisbane

The Brisbane International Cycle Park (BICP) at Murarrie Recreation Reserve is a world-class facility designed to elevate cycling and inline skating in Brisbane. Set within a 34-hectare reserve, the park is a premier destination for both high-performance athletes and recreational users, supporting the city’s cycling community in the lead-up to and beyond the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
COX Associate Director, Paul Focic
Public infrastructure that encourages participation in sport and recreation across all abilities is critical in supporting good health and wellbeing outcomes within the community. The Cycle Park and parkland setting delivers this in spades, combining to create a sporting precinct that will serve Brisbane for decades to come.
BICP caters to riders of all ages and abilities, offering high-quality infrastructure for training, events, and everyday recreation. The precinct includes:
- A road cycling course and international level criterium track.
- A 500-metre inline skating track.
- A re-purposed shadow track for multi-use recreational activities.
- A new multi-purpose Clubhouse with community facilities.
- Viewing mounds for spectators to enjoy the action or relax in the parklands.
- An upgraded car park with 200 spaces, improving accessibility.

At the heart of the precinct is the Clubhouse, a striking two-storey pavilion that serves as a hub for cyclists, skaters, and the broader community. Designed to be both iconic and highly functional, it overlooks the criterium track with a curved form that responds to the movement of the course. The Clubhouse design carefully manages multiple users of the precinct while creating a sense of spaciousness, ease of use, enhanced security, and functionality for competitive athletes through to casual riders and local community groups. The upper-level terrace provides prime viewing, while shaded areas below offer comfort for riders preparing to race. The Clubhouse is also designed for inclusivity, ensuring accessibility for all, including families and people with disabilities.
COX Director, Brendan Gaffney
The idea of designing a bespoke ‘pavilion in a park’ is always appealing to architects, so we were naturally delighted to assist BCC with their vision when the opportunity arose. We were inspired by the dynamic forms, flowing lines and gently curvilinear shapes of modern competition bicycles and speed-skates, where hard edges and orthogonal corners are anathema. We think the result is an exuberant architecture that speaks to the sheer joy of cycling and skating at speed.
Designed for Sustainability
Sustainability has been seamlessly integrated into BICP’s design and construction. The Clubhouse is 100% electric, powered by a 25-kilowatt solar system that generates more electricity than it consumes. Rainwater is harvested from the roof for toilet flushing and irrigation, and stormwater is filtered through bio-retention gardens before leaving the site. Water-efficient fixtures further reduce potable water consumption.
Built on a former landfill, the project embraced circular economy principles. Contaminated material was repurposed and capped with a clay liner to form two large spectator mounds, creating shaded seating and useable greenspace. Low-carbon concrete was used for external pathways, while existing asphalt and road base were incorporated into the new criterium track, minimising waste and environmental impact.

Community and Legacy
BICP is designed as an inclusive and welcoming space that encourages active participation across all levels of ability. The precinct features gender-equal facilities, an Adult Accessible Change Facility, and accessible entry points, aligning with international best practices.
More than just a sporting venue, BICP provides a dedicated pathway for emerging Olympians and Paralympians while fostering grassroots participation. By integrating world-class infrastructure with a focus on sustainability and accessibility, it is set to become a landmark destination—one that will shape Brisbane’s cycling and skating communities for generations to come.
