Woven Geomorphic Formations: Jennifer Robertson at the COX Gallery
[Above: Turbidite, 2024, Stainless steel, silk, linen, Woven on digital hand-loom]
Jennifer Robertson’s textile practice centres on drawing, photography and a complex weaving process. She is driven by a deep fascination with landscape and geomorphology. Weaving on a unique, digital hand-loom Jennifer produces large scale sculptural textiles that appear to float on the wall.
In this exhibition, Jennifer investigates ideas of natural repetition in structure and surface, rhythms and cycles, including tectonic, geomorphic and metamorphic rock activity.
COX Gallery Artist, Jennifer Robertson
Weathering agents like wind and water alter geomorphic forms. The way we describe rock shares a language with textiles – pleats, folds, faults, ridges, tessellations, ripples and layers.
Jennifer weaves linear matrixes using animal, vegetable and mineral fibres. Sourced from industries such as aeronautical and deep space, her fibres include brass, stainless steel, aluminium, copper, titanium, quartz, basalt, clay and carbon fibre, blended with silk and linen. The diverse material presents challenges. Contrasts and tensions are formed by building fine weft upon weft, using a hand shuttle for each fibre. Kept under tension whilst on the loom, the form is fully realised once the textile is removed.
Made from highly durable materials, these works are lightweight for their size and require minimal conservation, unlike most traditional textiles.
Jennifer Robertson is represented in public collections in Australia, New York, London and Japan.
