COX GALLERY: Unmoored: Laura Canty

Laura Canty, on her exhibition ‘Unmoored’.

Collage is a creative process which has consumed me for many years. During the age of AI, rapid image production and digital manipulation, analogue collage represents an adherence to the handmade. It offers scope for technical experimentation, and an interpretive openness which excites me as an artist.

As I arrange pieces of a collage, I am drawn to both the directness and the pliability of the medium. Selecting ‘everyday’ materials such as paper or fabric provides a creative freedom often restricted with more expensive materials. Reclaimed or handmade items are easily arranged, rearranged, potentially discarded, reintroduced, multiplied, altered, layered or erased; all before being secured to a surface.

Cut-ups make explicit a psychosensory process that is going on all the time anyway.

Combining materials which have been unmoored from their original context allows a semiotic interplay to come into being. An image communicates an altered language determined by its surroundings and how it is treated. The artist and viewer are free to draw on their own personal associations to create meaning.
