Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh Master Plan

Middle Head, New South Wales

Middle Head/Gubbuh Gubbuh is a significant heritage place, containing a precinct of former Defence buildings that form the primary built asset and centrepiece within the natural bushland environment. Further a land of natural and cultural significance, Gubbuh Gubbuh is home to illustrious First Nations, military and natural heritage values.

The key elements of the vision for Middle Head / Gubbuh Gubbuh were to create a place that is established and enhanced by its heritage. The Masterplan provides for a vibrant place, featuring sensitively activated buildings and public domain. It outlines the full potential, rather than what current funding permits, so future project decisions and staging can be made strategically.

The Master Plan envisions Gubbuh Gubbuh as a place of:

  • natural sanctuary, sustainability, and environmental care
  • enriched public access
  • enshrined memory, immersive learning, and interpretation excellence
  • built form and public domain excellence
  • life and vibrancy – a people place on one of Sydney’s finest headlands.

The Masterplan also considered a transition towards pedestrian mobility, transitioning away from vehicle movement. Middle Head was to be home to a headland loop path, an iconic Sydney walk connecting to the wider Sydney Harbour and broader precinct. Internally, the Masterplan considers greater incorporation with the existing north-south and east-west axis as well as informal, passive links to lookouts and areas for community events.
