Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway

Sydney, New South Wales

A generational opportunity to transform how people move across one of the world’s most iconic structures – making cycling safer and more convenient.

More than just infrastructure, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a symbol of connection and cultural identity. Every day, thousands cross it by train, car and foot – yet for cyclists, access has long been constrained by outdated infrastructure at both ends of the bridge.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway Access Program sought to change that by improving one of the most iconic routes in the world.

We were appointed by Transport for NSW to lead the Urban Design Framework – a critical piece of work that defines the design principles for new northern and southern access points.

These upgrades will make cycling a safer, easier and more attractive transport choice for more people, while enhancing connections to the broader cycle network.

Our framework brings together landscape, architecture, heritage and urban character, ensuring this project enhances not just movement, but experience.

We assessed every option developed since 1999 and considered the full spectrum of feasibility. The final design requirements outlined in the framework will ensure the project embodies excellence, serves the community and respects the surrounding environment and heritage, while supporting overall operation and maintenance.

A further assessment of seven options for the northern cycleway along Alfred Street South at Milson’s Point was undertaken, connecting Burton Street and Middlemass Street, as a tier one regional cycle route, connecting the North Shore with the Sydney CBD.

This is design as public service: delivering comfort, safety and amenity, while reinforcing what makes Sydney unique.
