Connecting people and places through world-class transport: the new Victoria Cross Station

The Victoria Cross Station is now open providing new access to the residential, business, education, and dining districts within North Sydney.

The new station is part of the Sydney Metro City section of what will be the M1 line and extends the North West Line from Chatswood, below the harbour and through the Sydney CBD, to Sydenham. The station is a catalyst for generational change to the city, supporting the continued growth of the North Sydney CBD and enhancing Sydney’s status as a global city.

COX were commissioned by Lendlease as lead architects and were also responsible for interior design and signage and wayfinding. The commission is part of a broader design consortium including Bates Smart and Aspect Studios, working in design unison on the over site development and urban design precinct.

Victoria Cross is a natural extension of North Sydney’s public domain, connecting its fragmented streets and lanes with a new east-west through-site link in the form of a laneway – open to the sky – and including the completion of the much-needed north-south civic boulevard.

Victoria Cross Station is an underground station with an island platform in a singular cavern space. It boasts entries and concourses at both the northern and southern ends of the station, complemented by public plazas, retail spaces and a 42-level commercial tower anchoring the growing urban density of North Sydney.

At its core, the station is designed to offer a streamlined and efficient customer experience. Intuitive movement and legibility are promoted through thoughtful arrangements of materials and careful shifts in scale and detail from station platform to concourse and station entry. This approach merges an elevated, world-class transport experience with a nuanced local material palette, reflecting the aspirations of Sydney as a city in constant evolution.

Innovative solutions provide natural light into subterranean concourses, enhancing the customer experience and aiding intuitive navigation. Configuration of the vertical transport within the station coupled with consistent and clear material choices mean that customers easily navigate from platform to public realm.

The new line includes fully new accessible stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal and Waterloo.
