Futureproofing a legacy: the historic Sydney sporting venue marking a new era under our design leadership

Leichhardt Oval, one of Sydney’s most cherished sporting venues, is entering a new era, and we are proud to be leading the design for its transformation.

A longtime hub for elite and community sport and lovingly referred to as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, the planned upgrades for Leichhardt Oval will ensure it continues to serve its community for generations to come.

Building on the Leichhardt Oval Masterplan we previously developed in collaboration with Inner West Council, the latest design work will enhance the spectator experience while modernising the ground to meet contemporary standards.

The design updates under consideration include a new northern grandstand that improves capacity, sightlines and comfort for fans. The existing western grandstand may also undergo upgrades that span enhanced seating, a new mezzanine level, refreshed corporate and media facilities and improved player amenities that prioritise inclusivity, particularly for female athletes.

While the historic Wayne Pearce Hill and Keith Barnes Stand will be preserved, the broader redevelopment will focus on improving accessibility, circulation and the overall user experience.

A renewed emphasis on catering, amenities and infrastructure will ensure that Leichhardt Oval remains a vibrant and functional space, whether for weekend matches, major sporting events or new opportunities. To expand its community benefit, it is also being explored as a live music and performance venue by Inner West Council.

“Projects that benefit the public good are at the heart of what we do. Combined with our history in stadia design, this uniquely positions us to shape this important transformation,” said COX Director, Lachlan Abercrombie. “Enhancing legacy venues to meet contemporary needs, improving accessibility and inclusivity for the community is a rewarding extension of this mission.”

By respecting the legacy of Leichhardt Oval while introducing thoughtful, future-focused improvements, we can create a venue that retains its soul but also embraces contemporary expectations.

With concept designs set for completion by April 2025, we look forward to working closely with Inner West Council and key stakeholders to refine the final vision.
