India’s 2036 Olympic Vision: Building a Legacy, Not Just a Games

India’s bid for the 2036 Olympics is shaping up to be a model of sustainability and inclusivity, with a vision that prioritises both community benefit and environmental responsibility. Ahmedabad, which is vying to be the country’s official bidding city, is at the centre of this ambition with the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Sports Enclave—a 350-acre complex designed to break away from the conventional stadium model.

COX, as part of the BCC Consortia delivering the SVP Enclave, is contributing to the development of this landmark precinct and its permanent venues. These venues are being designed to leave a lasting legacy for the city, independent of any future Games bid, while aligning with the IOC’s New Norms for candidate and host cities.

Director Alastair Richardson, a key planner for the enclave, emphasised that the design draws from India’s rich architectural heritage rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach. A significant portion—around 60-70%—of the precinct will be dedicated to open spaces, ensuring that the development remains integrated with the city rather than standing as an isolated sporting venue.

One of the standout features is a 70-acre Central Park designed as a ‘heat sink,’ filled with shady trees and green spaces to counter Ahmedabad’s intense climate. Additionally, smart paving technologies are being explored to absorb rather than radiate heat, further enhancing the site’s environmental resilience.

Beyond the Games, the city is committed to avoiding the fate of many Olympic venues that become underutilised ‘white elephants.’ Every facility is being designed with a long-term purpose in mind, ensuring they serve the local community well beyond the closing ceremony.

Further strengthening Ahmedabad’s position as the potential bid city, over the weekend Union home minister Amit Shah stated that it is India’s resolve that the 2036 Olympics should be held at the SVP Enclave: “The enclave will have more than 10 stadiums … the state government is working towards this goal with vigour”.
