Sydney Metro Victoria Cross Station: Shaping the City of Tomorrow

In the bustling heart of North Sydney, Victoria Cross Station is a transit hub that reimagines what public space can be. Designed by COX Architecture in collaboration with Lendlease, the underground station is part of the Sydney Metro line that runs under Sydney Harbour and marks a defining moment in Sydney’s urban evolution. It’s a place that challenges the very idea of a metro station, blending functionality with imagination to create a space that feels both timeless and futuristic.
Anthony Burke, internationally recognised for his work in architectural design and design theory has been researching city changing projects that are reshaping Sydney. To support this, we invited Anthony to the Sydney Metro Victoria Cross Station prior to opening.
In a video commissioned exclusively for COX, Anthony shares his review of the station’s design.
In his review, Anthony calls out its “fresh projection of what contemporary public space can be,” calling it a space that reflects Sydney’s dynamic future.
“Unlike other stations in the metro system that evoke traditional sandstone elements, Victoria Cross embraces an abstract, horizontal design that transcends place and time, offering commuters an entirely new experience. It’s a fusion of the future and the human scale, a station that invites exploration while providing comfort.”
Anthony Burke describes the station as a place where “futurist and humanist ideals” converge.
“It’s a space that invites reflection and pause, challenging the mundane and transforming the act of commuting into something more meaningful. The materials—smooth glass reinforced concrete panels, soft curves, and the crisp white of the pavilion-like structure—are chosen not just for function but for beauty, creating a seamless blend of art and utility.”
“Victoria Cross Station is already a civic landmark that connects people to both the city and to each other. As commuters move through the space, they become part of a larger story, a living network that unites the city in ways that go beyond the ordinary. The station is not just a physical space; it’s a reflection of Sydney’s aspirations—a city that embraces the future while remaining deeply human.”
“This visionary station offers a glimpse into what urban infrastructure can achieve when designed with imagination, purpose, and civic pride. It’s a place where the simplicity of movement is elevated into an experience that inspires, resonates, and connects. Victoria Cross Station stands as a beacon of what’s possible when architecture meets the future, shaping the city not just physically but emotionally.”
