Logan Hospital Maternity Services Refurbishment

The Maternity Refurbishment Project at Logan Hospital is a vital piece of infrastructure designed to meet the growing needs of one of Queensland’s busiest public birthing hospitals.

With close to 4,000 babies born at Logan Hospital each year, the expansion and modernisation of maternity services ensures the facility continues to meet the expectations of the Logan community. The project delivers contemporary birthing spaces, greater choice for women, and improved comfort for partners and families.

This refurbishment replaces the ageing and functionally constrained facility that previously limited Maternity Services and responds directly to the growing demand in the rapidly expanding Metro South region. It enhances patient amenity and birthing choices, creating a safer, more supportive environment for women and families.

The project facilitates the delivery of services in line with the Logan Hospital Clinical Service Statement projections for growth. It includes an additional six inpatient beds (bringing the total to 36), five new birthing rooms (increasing the total to 14), and eight birthing pools to support greater choice in birthing options. The Special Care Nursery has been expanded to accommodate 26 cots, and birthing suites now feature new glazing with integral blinds to enhance privacy and amenity.

A dedicated staff office area has been incorporated, and a new, dedicated Maternity Access Road has been opened. Available 24/7 for expectant parents, the road leads directly to a drop-off zone outside the Maternity Assessment Centre (MAC), which connects to the birth suites and the Maternity Inpatient Unit. This will significantly improve accessibility and the overall experience for patients and families.

The project presented a range of challenges that required flexible and responsive design solutions. COX and its subconsultants remained closely engaged throughout construction, providing ongoing input to accommodate evolving project requirements.

Client testimonial

The project spanned a six-year period from initial design through to completion. During this time, COX demonstrated a clear understanding of the evolving challenges and proactively developed strategies to address them. Their collaborative approach with the contractor helped mitigate potential delays and reduce project disruption.

COX delivered this project as Principal Consultant carrying out architectural and interior design services and were supported by Hames Sharley for health facilities planning. We are delighted to see this project now successfully completed. The refurbishment is part of the broader $540 million transformation of Logan Hospital – ensuring high-quality healthcare is delivered closer to home, now and into the future.
