Track Record: Cox Design Jakarta Velodrome

The 2018 Commonwealth Games saw a host of World and Games records broken, with three Cox-designed venues playing host to world-class sporting achievements and electric atmospheres.

The Gold Coast Aquatic Center, Cairns Convention Centre and Anna Meares Velodrome were transformed into world sporting stages, reverting once again to strong, sustainable anchors for community engagement and use when the Games concluded.

The Anna Meares Velodrome was purpose-built for the Commonwealth Games, however we considered the local community and versatility when creating the sporting complex.

We designed the stadium to feature 1500 permanent seats based on the relatively modest requirement for spectator seating for national events, including additional space allowance for 2,500 bump-in seats along the track straights to suit the requirements of the Commonwealth Games.

The stadium has a diverse range of facilities that provide ongoing community legacy benefit and mean it has a genuine post-Games life. It can operate as a competition or training track, and includes a public gym, and hirable function space. The infield is used for court sports like futsal and school physical education, with operable nets separating this space from the track. The concourses are used for yoga and Pilates, and the kiosk and public amenities can serve both the Velodrome and adjacent BMX track.

Four World Records and 13 Games Records were broken during #GC2018, and the track continues to serve the local community and national team beyond the Games events.

The Jakarta Velodrome is Cox Architecture’s newest cycling track, built for the 2018 Asian Games and designed for community use after the event, much like AMV.

The Jakarta Velodrome track has been approved by the UCI and achieved the highest certification of Category 1; an incredible achievement and a testament to the ongoing sporting design excellence of Cox Architecture.
