COX’s Adelaide Studio Wins the National Architecture Award for Interior Architecture
When you work in a space, you know its soul. And for those lucky enough to spend their days in the Adelaide COX studio, they’ll tell you it’s everything it aspires to be: beautiful, comfortable, sustainable and inspiring. It’s a place for focused work, for collaboration, for breaking bread. And now, it’s also a celebrated example of interior design in Australia, proudly taking home the 2024 National Architecture Award for Interior Architecture.
The jury commended the studio’s innovative design, describing it as a “flexible and hackable space” that supports both teamwork and moments of quiet, individual reflection. “This vision has been masterfully realised in their studio project and emerges as a model of sophisticated interior design,” the jury remarked.
With driving design principles rooted in community, wellness, and craft, the studio is both a workplace and a place of inspiration. The open-plan layout invites engagement, while private rooms encourage focused discussions and thoughtful retreats. Calming and orderly, the main work area is spacious and filled with natural light, offering sweeping views across the cityscape. Thoughtful material choices—cream brick, timber, and cork—infuse the space with warmth, texture, and a tangible connection to its place.
COX Director, Zoe King
This project was a true labour of love—a space crafted by our people, for our people. It’s more than just a workplace; it’s a source of inspiration. Every corner resonates with the energy we bring each day, blending dedication, camaraderie, and, of course, a few laughs along the way. This is our hub—the heart of who we are and what we do.
The studio’s custom-crafted elements, created in collaboration with local artisans, further embody COX’s commitment to supporting both local and national industry. The jury praised these bespoke touches, noting that they reflect our deep connection to Adelaide and a dedication to quality craftsmanship.
“This project was made possible through close collaboration with local artisans—the late Khai Liew, Remmington Matters, Emma Sadie Thompson, and Phoebe Kretschmer—whose talent brought each detail to life. Working with Aboriginal Elder Rosalind Coleman and Kaurna artist Tony Wilson, we acknowledged Country through Kaurna room names and a five-meter artwork that connects the space to its history. From handcrafted furniture to thoughtful details, every element celebrates South Australia’s cultural richness,” Zoe explains.
