Cunnamulla Hot Springs & Riverwalk

Cunnamulla, Queensland

On February 1, 2024, the award-winning Cunnamulla Hot Springs and Riverwalk, owned by the Paroo Shire Council, officially opened to the public. Nestled in South-West Queensland, this retreat offers travellers a unique outback experience. Recognised by National Geographic in their ‘Best of the World: “Worth the Trip” Wellness’ feature, it invites visitors to enjoy relaxation, cultural immersion, and natural beauty.

COX Director, Tim Morgan

The Paroo Council’s vision to revitalise Cunnamulla by attracting travellers has been realised through the Cunnamulla Hot Springs. The creation of a holistic outback experience that embraces the beauty of the Warrego River and its rich flora and fauna offers visitors a tranquil and therapeutic environment.

Drawing inspiration from the surrounding environment, Cunnamulla’s design embodies a deep connection to the land, culture, and community, guided by principles of co-creation and immersion. The project has boosted regional tourism in Outback Queensland, redefining relaxation amidst the backdrop of the Warrego River and the vast outback skies.

At its heart, the project celebrates the region’s natural beauty and the lifeline of the area—the artesian basin and Barwon River. Visitors are encouraged to explore beyond the immediate area, enjoying the serenity of the river and expansive horizons while soaking in the hot springs.

The site also serves as a vibrant hub for community gatherings and events, including the popular Outback River Lights Festival. The surrounding gardens host frequent food and storytelling events by local Indigenous groups, offering a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange between First Nations peoples and visitors.

“The design concept is a celebration of the lifegiving waters of the Great Artesian Basin and the critical role it’s played in culture and society over ancient and recent times,” says Paroo Shire Council Director of Community Support & Engagement, Tony Koch.

Today, this facility is a tremendous community asset that will deliver opportunity to our community for eons. Water, regenerative experiences, and relaxed gathering areas are a feature of outback life. Cunnamulla Hot Springs delivers all this … a destination!

The built forms harmonise seamlessly with the landscape, featuring low concrete walls and pavilions that blend into the riverine forest. The hot pools are organically shaped to reflect the terrain, offering contemplative views of the river and sky. Seven geothermal pools, each at different temperatures, a cold plunge pool, a sauna, and a steam room, provide a soothing experience beneath the shade of coolabah and eucalyptus trees.

Sustainability is central to the project’s design, with minimal impact on the riverbank and natural cooling and ventilation systems. The hot springs also serve as an educational resource about the artesian basin, and a newly created wetland ecosystem provides habitat for wildlife and an outdoor classroom for local children.

Reinvigorating Cunnamulla as a top destination

Cunnamulla was envisioned as a catalyst to reinvigorate the town and serve as a gateway to the Paroo district.

Cunnamulla Hot Springs is not only a place for relaxation but also a catalyst for revitalising the town and the wider Paroo district. It has become a key destination in the East Australian Hot Springs Cultural Bathing Trail, connecting visitors to the diverse landscapes, habitats, and Indigenous cultures along the route, with the thermal pools adding a unique layer of comfort.

Despite its remote location, the development has exceeded expectations, with peak seasons seeing up to 200 visitors daily. This increase in tourism has positively impacted the local economy, encouraging longer stays and fostering new businesses.

Peninsula Hot Springs Group Chair and Creative Director, Charles Davidson

While a lot of the Outback has seen a downturn in visitation in 2024 from a post COVID peak in 2023 Cunnamulla has bucked the trend this winter with a 10-20 percent increase in visitation.

Cunnamulla Hot Springs has inspired a new wave of wellness travel that is bringing the Eastern States of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland together with the creation of the East Australian Hot Springs Cultural Bathing Trail.

In essence, the Cunnamulla Hot Springs and Riverwalk Project represents a holistic vision of wellness, environmental stewardship, and community vitality set against the timeless beauty of the Australian outback.
