Journal Market Way

Melbourne, Victoria

Market Way at 100 Franklin St is the new landmark development for Journal Student Living, nestled within the Queen Victoria Market precinct, an area undergoing an exciting transformation in Melbourne’s CBD.

The 38-level tower will stitch together a network of urban laneways and a proposed green boulevard as part of the city’s precinct masterplan providing a new southern gateway to the market precinct.

The design response draws inspiration from the heritage fabric of the Queen Victoria Market through references to materiality, structure and texture within the tower’s articulated facade and laneway buildings. A strong emphasis on the shared common spaces and amenity was a key design strategy to create safe and welcoming spaces that foster a sense of community amongst residents.

COX has retained the four-storey heritage Burbank House which has been adapted to house the building’s unique common spaces, connected through a central atrium and vertical circulation network designed to foster a safe and welcoming building community. Placement of these spaces at the lower levels promotes engagement between residents and the neighbouring precinct through a series of external landscaped terraces.

Shared communal spaces on every floor bring views and natural light into each lift lobby while a large sky terrace at the tower’s crown offers views of the city skyline and unique places for respite and outdoor activity.
