Mac Point Multipurpose Stadium
Hobart, Tasmania
The Mac Point Multipurpose Stadium in Hobart features an innovative timber and steel framed fixed ETFE translucent roof complemented by a respectful approach to the site’s rich heritage. During the design process, the project team considered the location’s history, surrounding spaces, user needs, and the desire to create a truly exceptional fan experience.
Featuring a low profile built-form and woven-style facade, the design references the site’s previous industrial heritage as well as local maritime heritage. It is culturally informed under the guidance of Palawa community members by reflecting the continuing cultural practice of weaving, representing the opportunity to weave together cultures and stories.
In addition to hosting sports, the multipurpose stadium will be designed to support a range of cultural and community events, as well as year-round hospitality and entertainment.
The stadium includes:
- A 1,500-person function room with views to kunanyi / Mount Wellington
- A design informed by modelling cricket ball trajectory data to ensure its ready to host the best quality cricket games
- A stage pocket in the northern stand to support concerts and events, minimising impact on the field and reducing costs for event operators
- Easy to follow and accessible design features – including a single continuous concourse that services the whole stadium, enabling fans to enter any gate and easily find their seat
- A seating bowl design that will bring crowds closer to the action
- Separated back of house and catering facilities with a below ground service road to separate vehicles and stadium visitors and users.
COX Director Stuart Harper
The fully roofed stadium design showcases Tasmanian timber technology, delivers something special for each user and integrates hospitality with heart: all contributing to a presence and fan experience that will be unmistakably Tasmanian.
The collaboration between COX and local practice Cumulus Studio will support a design outcome that is more than a stadium, creating a destination that brings communities together, celebrates sport, and is unmistakably Tasmanian.
