Elevating Cairns: The Cazalys Stadium Masterplan Unveiled

The recently unveiled Cazalys Stadium Masterplan by AFL Cairns marks a bold vision for the region’s future, positioning it as a premier destination for sports and entertainment.
Managed by project management and advisory COHA Group in collaboration with COX and local firm CA Architects, the plan reflects the needs of elite international events with grassroots participation. Designed to future-proof the venue for the next 30 years, the redevelopment also positions Cairns as a key player for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Richard Coulson, COX Director
Cazalys is an important and well–loved venue for northern Australia. The proposed scheme looks to honour the spectacular Cairns setting retaining the unique feeling of the ground.
The masterplan envisions a 20,000-seat venue delivered in multiple stages. Planned upgrades such as LED lighting, improved drainage, enhanced accessibility, and an adjacent multi-use indoor centre will ensure the precinct continues to support multiple sports as well as serving as a music and entertainment venue.

A Platform for Global and Local Success
Cazalys Stadium has a proud history of marquee events, including international cricket, AFL matches, and a legendary Elton John 2017 concert, which drew a record crowd of 20,000 fans. COX-designed venues, Queensland Country Bank Stadium and Great Barrier Reef Arena show the importance of re-imagining regional venues and upgrading them to be more attractive to national and international hirer requirements, whilst also greatly improving spectator amenity and accessibility. This redevelopment will revitalise Cazalys Stadium, boosting its earning potential and positioning it as a strong contender for future high-profile opportunities.
Craig Lees, AFL Cairns General Manager
Our ambition is to ensure Cazalys Stadium is front of mind for hosting Olympic and Paralympic content in 2032, as part of Cairns’ role as a co-host city. It also opens the door to decentralising elite sports and entertainment events across the regions in Queensland, ensuring our community has a stadium to enjoy every day.

Community and Economic Benefits
Important to the redevelopment is a vision to create a vibrant community hub. The Athlete and Community Active Wellbeing Centre will support elite athletes, grassroots programs, and local health and fitness initiatives. The project is also expected to deliver significant economic benefits, creating hundreds of jobs during construction, and boosting tourism and local businesses through national and international events, concerts, and conferences.
COX Senior Associate, Robert Callanan
