Construction begins at Victoria’s State Basketball Centre

Construction is now underway on the redevelopment of Victoria’s State Basketball Centre, a project that will take the game in Victoria to a new level for community players to elite athletes.

The redevelopment will deliver high-performance facilities for Basketball Victoria, Basketball Australia,  the WNBL Deakin Melbourne Boomers and NBL South East Melbourne Phoenix as well as 12 new indoor community courts for local competitions and tournaments and events – taking the total number of indoor courts at the expanded facility to 18.

The centre will provide an administrative base for the Boomers and Phoenix along with Basketball Australia, Basketball Victoria and Knox Basketball. The south-eastern suburbs drawcard will also host a regional gymnastics facility while players and supporters will enjoy the amenity of a new café and town square.

Once completed in 2023, the centre will host up to two million visitors a year.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula

Victoria is the epicentre of basketball in Australia, and our state centre will become Australia’s premier facility. It’s a great result for players of all ages and standards and means the future of the game in Victoria is strong.

COX are working with contractor ADCO, and with the local and state government and community to create a world class facility which is responsive to the needs of its community, and that is flexible, sustainable and innovative.

Melbourne’s south-east is fanatical about basketball and these courts will become part of the lives of so many young people in coming years. It’s fantastic to see this ground-breaking project get up and running.

The architectural response is predicated around the innovative undulating barrel vaulted roof, creating a new groundplane within the urban fringe that responses to the Dandenong Ranges to the east.  At the heart of the new facility is a new major public entry forming a ‘town square’ for the sporting community that will call this place home. Designed to sit respectfully in its parkland setting, its warm and natural material palette reflects its community and environmental focus.

The focal point of the Centre is the ‘town square’ which will provide a meeting place and front door for arrival. This will be a welcoming place, where sporting activity and community connect. Natural light flows into the space via clerestory windows while a central oculus provides a dramatic central feature and defining aspect to the space.

When complete, the State Basketball Centre will be one of the most significant basketball facilities in the Southern Hemisphere, and a nexus for community sport.  This is a smart building, for a thriving sporting community.
