COX Projects Recognised at the 2025 AIA Greater Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards

Three COX projects were recently recognised at the 2025 Australian Institute of Architects Greater Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards, celebrating excellence in architectural design across the region. All three will now be considered at the State level.

AURA Somerset at Indooroopilly
AURA Somerset received a commendation in the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing category and was awarded the Lord Mayor’s Brisbane Buildings that Breathe Architecture Prize.
Positioned within the Indooroopilly Golf Club, AURA Somerset embraces the concept of ‘ageing in place’. The project demonstrates how high-quality architecture can support community connection, passive design and biodiversity. Buildings are arranged in response to topography and views, while landscaped gardens and generous open spaces create a sense of calm and retreat.

Somerset is a truly ‘breathable’ development and an excellent exemplar of retirement living typology embracing the principles of the Buildings that Breathe Guide.

Brisbane International Cycle Park
Commended in the Public Architecture category, the Brisbane International Cycle Park (BICP) was recognised by the jury as ‘a world-class cycling facility that sets a new standard for community recreation spaces. The centrepiece of the development is a dynamic, curved clubhouse building that overlooks the Criterium racing track, providing a premier destination for international cycling.’ When assessing the project’s sustainability credentials, the jury described it as ‘a benchmark in sustainable design, grounded in first principles.’ It will now also progress for State consideration in Sustainability.

The project supports elite sport and everyday community use. Located within the Murarrie Recreation Reserve, the park includes a pump track, criterium track, club building and amenities, and supports a future world-class BMX freestyle park. BICP provides a unique multi-purpose destination for recreation, competition, and connection.
COX Director, Brendan Gaffney
We were inspired by the dynamic forms, flowing lines and gently curvilinear shapes of modern competition bicycles and speed-skates, where hard edges and orthogonal corners are anathema. We think the result is an exuberant architecture that speaks to the sheer joy of cycling and skating at speed.

Kangaroo Point Bridge
Commended in the Urban Design Architecture category, the Kangaroo Point Bridge is one of Brisbane’s newest landmarks.
2025 Greater Brisbane Regional Architecture Award Jury Citation
Kangaroo Point Bridge adds a further structural typology to the series of pedestrian bridges that have redefined connectivity in the Brisbane city centre.

Spanning 460 metres across the Brisbane River, the bridge provides an accessible link between Kangaroo Point and the CBD. It supports active transport while enhancing Brisbane’s riverine amenity and civic identity. The bridge’s elegant cable-stay design celebrates its setting and creates a new public space for the city.
A large-scale and deeply collaborative undertaking, the project brought together expertise from across disciplines to deliver a significant piece of public infrastructure for Brisbane.
The procurement process involved COX developing the Concept and Reference design and being retained by the Client through delivery.
Led by Brisbane City Council, the large team included:
