Dreaming Forward: The Future of Our Practice, Projects and Purpose

This year’s VIVID theme, Dream, is not only a deeply human act, but also a starting point for design. More than just problem-solving — design also helps us imagine new futures.

At COX, we dream forward.  By imagining the possibilities, we shape places that are beautiful, equitable and deeply connected to people and place.

Through ‘Dreaming Forward’, a vitrine installation in our Sydney studio, we invite you to glimpse into the next chapter of our practice through the lens of five projects that represent our evolving approach to design.

These illuminated sections are frozen moments of projects, some not yet realised, captured mid-dream. Looking ahead, our design principles remain a steady foundation — but we’re continually evolving. These projects show how we’re refreshing and reinterpreting our practice for the future: responsive to context, inclusive of Country, and ambitious in shaping the cities, regions and stories of tomorrow.

COX Senior Associate and installation designer, Anthony Crozier

These sections not only reveal architectural form, but also reflect the way we think — how we document, iterate and imagine together.

These projects present new understandings of what civic architecture can be – from Western Sydney International Airport, a new global gateway shaped by sunlight, landscape and cultural connection; to the Bega National Circularity Centre, a pioneering model for regional innovation and sustainability. At Macquarie Point Stadium, we’re redefining civic sporting landmarks through Country, culture and community. Riverside Theatres reimagines a cultural icon in Sydney’s second CBD – reconnecting community through performance and deep respect for First Nations heritage. And at the Australian War Memorial, a nationally significant redevelopment makes space for reflection, healing and inclusive national storytelling.

Come dream with us.

Bega National Circularity Centre

A blueprint for regional innovation and climate action, the Bega National Circularity Centre reimagines how communities can live, learn, and lead through circular design. As a new typology for economic, social, and environmental regeneration, it positions regional Australia as a vital contributor to the nation’s transition to a circular economy.

Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium

More than a stadium, this project is a civic catalyst for Hobart — a place where sport, culture, and community converge. Embedded in Country and Tasmanian identity, the design celebrates connection to landscape and sea, while enabling a future-ready venue that can evolve with its community.

Riverside Theatres Redevelopment

COX with 3XN Architects, Aileen Sage, Turf Design Studio, and Bangawarra have created a visionary design that blends contemporary architecture with First Nations inspired interiors. Located on the banks of Parramatta River, this project transforms an existing cultural landmark into a vibrant performing arts destination. It’s about opening up — to the city, to new audiences, to artists and stories that reflect contemporary Australia. Riverside Theatres will become a living room for Western Sydney’s rich cultural life.

Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport

Set to redefine the experience of arrival and departure in Australia, this project is shaped by deep engagement with local Dharug Custodians and the Western Sydney context. The primary design aim is to maximise user experience through inspired architecture, thoughtful urban design, and airport planning to create welcoming, calm, and engaging spaces. Designed for a low-carbon future, it’s a people-first, place-aware airport — a new benchmark for infrastructure that balances innovation, culture and environmental performance.

Australian War Memorial Redevelopment

This renewal carefully extends one of the nation’s most significant civic spaces. Through sensitive additions and new gallery spaces, the project honours diverse service experiences while creating space for contemporary reflection. It invites new voices and stories, ensuring future generations can connect with the Memorial in meaningful ways. The Memorial is undergoing a significant modernisation and expansion of its galleries and buildings to continue narrating the stories of Australians who have served in modern conflicts, connecting the spirit of the past, present, and future.
