Game On Again for Browne Park

Rockhampton turned out in full force as the Central Queensland (CQ) Capras ran onto the field for the first time in over two years. The completion of the $62.78 million redevelopment of Browne Park, now called Aurizon Stadium, marks the beginning of a new era for one of the region’s most historic venues.

Last Saturday saw 4,500 roaring fans packing out the upgraded, an electric atmosphere propelling the Capras to a triumphant victory, and a renewed sense of pride in a stadium that has been the spiritual home of the Capras since 1918.

“That win’s right up there; just the atmosphere of the day and the build-up, it’s probably the biggest occasion I’ve been part of,” said CQ Capras’ co-captain Blake Moore.

Located on the lands of the Darumbal People, Browne Park has long been a site of significance – a place where Indigenous and non‑Indigenous young people have come together through sport, and hardworking families have gathered here on weekends from great distances. The region has produced many proud Queensland sports men and women – including State of Origin greats – whose stories are woven into the identity of this ground.

The redevelopment also offered an opportunity to acknowledge both colonial and pre‑colonial histories. Archways to the street reflect the formality of Rockhampton’s civic buildings, while the seating pattern facing Nurim (Mt Archer) captures the topography of the surrounding mountains. The local Darumbal community guided this process, with Aunty Nhaya Nicky Hatfield describing the design as one that:

Reflects strength, protection and unity. Even when two teams face one another in competition, this place brings people together. It is a place to play with heart, to stand in good spirit and to be surrounded by the cultural presence of the mountains, reminding us all that we belong to Country, and the Country holds us.

Designed by COX in collaboration with Design+Architecture and delivered by Hutchies in partnership with the Queensland Government, the redevelopment has transformed Browne Park into a contemporary, multi‑use venue ready to support the region’s next generation of sport and entertainment.

The new three‑level grandstand replaces the former Jack Crow Stand, lifting capacity from 750 to more than 3,200 seats. It also introduces universally designed change rooms, upgraded broadcast and coaching facilities, food and beverage outlets, and dedicated administration spaces for the Capras.

Beyond Rugby League, the redevelopment positions Browne Park as a catalyst for broader economic and cultural activity. With future stages of the masterplan set to accommodate up to 18,000 people for concerts and major events, the venue will play a central role in attracting new opportunities to Rockhampton and supporting local businesses year‑round.

Browne Park has always been an important gathering place for the community. Seeing it revitalised – full, loud, and alive again – shows just how special this ground is to Central Queensland. Today felt like the start of its next century.
