GLION ARENA KOBE
Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan

Located in the Port of Kobe, GLION ARENA KOBE is Japan’s first waterfront arena and home to the Kobe Storks (Kobe Sutōkusu) professional basketball team.
The multi-purpose 10,000-seat arena and surrounding Tottei Park and entertainment precinct creates a new landmark for the city of Kobe and an enduring facility for future generations.

Conceptually the sweeping roof profile, reminiscent of a stork in flight, connects the forested Mt. Rokko to the sea in a sculptural gesture. Opening out to the Seto inland sea, the building expresses the waterfront heritage and welcomes the public to the port wharf.
The project is driven by a “Smartest Arena” concept. Soft, hard, digital and social aspects are connected to promote collaboration with partners and contribute to Kobe’s revitalisation through urban redevelopment.

In addition to basketball, the arena is designed to host concerts, conferences and exhibitions. Dining and open terraces will allow patrons to enjoy the surrounding park area before and after events. Beyond event days, the aim is to activate the arena and surrounding precinct year-round for the local community to enjoy.
COX collaborated with Obayashi Corporation to develop the design up to design development stage.
