Christchurch Justice + Emergency Services Precinct Wins Gold at NZIA Canterbury Awards

The Christchurch Justice and Emergency Services Precinct has won the Public and Interior Architecture categories in the NZIA Canterbury Awards.

Encompassing incredible design complexity, the jury cited the precinct as “well-conceived and beautifully constructed project”.  The 40,000m² precinct houses 19 multi-jurisdictional courtrooms, an emergency operations centre, facilities for police, corrections, the fire service and St John Ambulance.

The Justice precinct also encompasses the emergency management teams of the Ministry of Civil Defence, Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury, along with the Ministry of Justice and judiciary – all in one connected facility that breaks with traditional defensive justice architecture to embrace a more open, transparent environment.

The precinct was the first major public work to be built by the New Zealand Government in Christchurch since the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. The technical, multi-disciplinary aspects were challenging elements of the architecture which Cox and our project partners, Warren + Mahoney and Opus Architects, resolved with clever design consideration and collaboration.

Congratulations to the New Zealand Government, our project partners Warren + Mahoney, and Opus Architecture, and consultants who contributed to the precinct on the accolade.
