Locals Given First Look at New Queensland Country Bank Stadium

Queensland Country Bank Stadium was officially opened on the weekend when thousands of North Queenslanders toured the venue, for free, at the Public Open Day.

Locals, sports fans and members of the design team filled the stadium, touring the facilities, sitting in the grandstands and experiencing the stadium’s state-of-the-art design for the first time.

Designed in association with Counterpoint Architecture, the final project was achieved after a four year, deeply collaborative process between the design team, HPW, Stadiums Queensland, WATPAC and the North Queensland Cowboys.

Consultation with the Gurambilbarra Wulgurukaba Peoples played an important role in the stadium’s delivery. COX recognise the Wulgurukaba people of Gurambilarra (Townsville) and Yunbenun (Magnetic Island) as the traditional custodians of the land on which the Queensland Country Bank Stadium stands.

Architects and designers from both COX and Counterpoint staffed a booth inside the stadium for open day – answering the public’s questions about its design. A common question the team got was if the stadium could withstand cyclones – which every time they were able to respond with ‘yes!’

COX Director, Richard Coulson

There was a real sense that although locals will have seen the stadium emerging over the past two years that being in it for the first time has transformed their understanding of the place.

The sense of engagement with the city, the capturing of views, the elegance of the roof and the notion of it being special to Townsville and Queensland all came through in our discussions with the visitors on the day.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk spoke on the day, describing the new stadium as “world class” and anticipating that it will attract many high calibre events.

This is a world class facility and what we’re going to see very clearly is people coming from across Queensland and across Australia.

COX would like to congratulate our client, the Queensland Government, all stakeholders and the people of Townsville on the completion of this new stadium.
