Scotch College Errington Retreat
Hawthorn, Victoria

Classified of State Significance, the Scotch College campus in Hawthorn has undergone a physical and cultural renaissance over the past decade.
As one of the school’s earliest traditions, boarding plays an important role in this revitalisation. An adaptive reuse opportunity was identified to reimagine a former scullery and only remnant of the original Glen House mansion demolished in the 1960s. Built in 1875, that remaining portion is one of the oldest heritage buildings on campus.

Located in the heart of the boarding precinct, the vision to repurpose the obsolete building was to build on its rich heritage and deliver an outstanding experience for current and future generations.
COX worked with experienced consultants to restore Glen House’s original character, from the feature timber truss to the slate roof and carefully repaired masonry facade, whilst creating a contemporary sanctuary.

The new built form, a modernist single storey glazed pavilion, adopts a restrained, sensitive expression with dark metal framing elements – a considered contrast to the existing building’s solid masonry. The landscape is reflected in the glazed walls providing continuity between garden and retreat.

Non-original additions were removed, and interiors stripped and refurbished to create a kitchenette, meeting space, lounge and gymnasium. The badly damaged gable roof was dismantled and rebuilt to the same external profile, reusing existing slates.
Errington Retreat has brought together old and new to create a relaxed, welcoming setting for boarders and families to connect, supported by multipurpose indoor and outdoor spaces.
