Scotch College Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science
Scotch College, Hawthorn, Melbourne
The Sir Zelman Cowen Centre for Science functions as a teaching and learning environment, providing a network of spaces that allow Scotch College to build on its past whilst projecting its future. The architecture supports the College’s motto ‘engaging curious minds’ as well as its pedagogical program which integrates theoretical and practical learning.
The mass of the building is divided into a range of fine-grain spaces including collaborative lounge areas, media booths, reading nooks and roof-top learning zones that encourage learning outside the classroom as well as referencing the urban characteristics of the existing buildings, creating inviting human-scale environments.
The scheme includes general and specialist labs, student-led research spaces, prep rooms, staff facilities, an auditorium and collaborative areas over three levels plus a rooftop garden.
Each level offers a unique learning landscape focused around a central hub dubbed ‘The Atoll’, a core element encircled by teaching and learning spaces that encourages natural light into the interior as well as providing visual connection and innate wayfinding.
The suite of spaces provide an ideal platform for education through a diverse range of active, participatory and collaborative environments, preparing students for a lifetime of learning and curiosity.
