Allianz Stadium Wins Top Urban Design Title at the 2024 NSW Architecture Awards

The Australian Institute of Architects NSW Chapter announced the winners of the 2024 NSW Architecture Awards, with Allianz Stadium winning the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design and receiving a Public Commendation for Public Architecture.

At the 2024 NSW Architecture Awards, Allianz Stadium emerged triumphant, celebrated with two titles in the urban design and public architecture categories.

Taking home the top gong for Urban Design, the Lloyd Rees Award, the stadium was celebrated by the jury for going beyond a ‘typical stadium,’ and expanding the public domain into a space for all – offering intimate spaces, dedicated play areas, and grand civic gestures that come alive on event days.

The stadium is as much for the patron as it is the passerby – offering a world-class experience inside while infusing the surrounding area with the electric energy of the events within. The jury said that “this insightful approach to the public realm sets a benchmark for integrating large-scale sporting facilities into the urban fabric, promoting daily experiences and public benefit beyond game day and outside the pay wall”.

Crucially, the design excels at accommodating large crowds while maintaining a human-scaled experience for non-event days through varied spatial arrangements and programmed activities.

Also recognised with a commendation in the Public Architecture category, the jury further praised the stadium’s ‘intuitive circulation system [that] transforms the spectator journey, highlighted by a dramatic entry level which offers sweeping panoramas of the field and seating areas.’

The redeveloped Allianz Stadium represents the latest in global sport architecture trends. A true multi-use rectangular stadium, it hosts three sports and is also ready-made for cultural and community events – gleaming as the trophy of Sydney’s unique inner-city precinct.

A ‘stadium in the park,’ Allianz Stadium enhances the significant recreation and sports precinct at Moore Park, creating new active spaces for patrons and the community, and reinforcing NSW’s ability to host international, national, and local events.
