Macquarie Group’s new global headquarters in Sydney’s CBD is a flexible, sustainable workplace that prioritises collaboration and connection.
The Metro Martin Place project provided Macquarie Group with a unique opportunity to consolidate multiple Sydney offices into one CBD campus (50 Martin Place & 1 Elizabeth) in the heart of the city. Under the leadership of Macquarie’s project team, COX worked as one of a diverse group of Sydney based consultants, including Architectus, Rapt Studio, and the designer of the base building, JPW, to help Macquarie achieve its bold aspirations.

We aspired to create a future proofed workplace that would evolve with Macquarie Group and enable them to do more with less. We are thrilled with the level of innovation and reuse throughout the project. Macquarie’s commitment to sustainability is exemplary.
COX also collaborated with Macquarie’s in-house Studio team on designing Macquarie’s state of the art Studio space. The Studio is fully isolated acoustically from the main building structure creating a media-grade production facility. The space features filming space, production offices, editing suites, green rooms, makeup room, and a workspace.
Macquarie’s new Sydney office has been designed with a dual focus on sustainability and wellbeing. Local timbers are complemented by tonal upholsteries connecting to the local Sydney context, like the iconic staircase in “Sydney Blue” that takes inspiration from the city’s water and sky. Many of the furniture pieces are also designed and manufactured by local craftspeople.
In normal operations, 1 Elizabeth operates on 100% electricity and is net zero. It has also achieved a 6-Star Green Star Design rating.
The diverse range of specialist environments opened the door for numerous creative designers and agencies to collaborate on this project.
