Cricket Central

Sydney, New South Wales

A new home for cricket, where players, administrators and the wider community intersect.

Located at Sydney Olympic Park, COX has supported the development of a new home for Cricket NSW, a major infrastructure project, across two stages.

Located on remediated former industrial land, Cricket Central is a dedicated, year-round cricket facility that serves regional and metropolitan cricketers, both community participants and professionals.

Cricket NSW Chief Executive, Lee Germon

Cricket Central’s world class facilities are the envy not only of Australian Cricket, but sports across the country and many parts of the world. It is a privilege to have a home such as this for our sport in NSW, providing access and opportunity for the community and our elite athletes alike.

The first stage of the project, completed in 2022, marked the beginning of a new era for cricket in New South Wales with the establishment of the centre’s formal facilities. Comprising a two-storey cricket centre and an oval settling into the landscape, it is now home to the NSW Blues, NSW Breakers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder. The first phase also encompassed the design and construction of 50 outdoor turf practice nets, a 15-lane indoor facility, change rooms, a gym, rehabilitation and recovery centre and cafe.

Stage two builds on this momentum, expanding opportunity for community engagement. Our design extends the precinct with a two-storey pavilion. The ground-level change rooms and dugouts anchor the building in the rhythms of match day. Flexible space on the second storey include balcony viewing, meeting rooms and function space that draws spectators, coaches and players into the heart of the game. With the addition of night lighting to enhance broadcast capability after hours, the precinct transforms seamlessly from a training ground into a venue ready for competition, connection and the next chapter of cricket in NSW.

COX Director, Russell Lee

This is a place where athletes, administrators and fans at every level of the game can come together.

“It’s where someone can sit on the boundary and watch their heroes train, then step onto the same turf to chase their own ambitions. That kind of proximity is powerful. It’s the spark that can turn a casual interest into the beginning of a bright future – or simply be a catalyst for community connection,” says Russell.

Another important addition to the design is a glass viewing wall that allows parents to watch their children train.

Compared to the Sydney Cricket Ground, which holds 48,000 spectators, the Cricket Central grandstand has a capacity of 1,500, making it an ideal size for community-focused competitions, small international matches and more family-friendly viewing.

This project marks our ongoing commitment to championing and improving access to elite and community sports facilities across Australia, following other similar completed projects like the Victorian Cricket and Community Centre, the South Australian Sports Institute and the Karen Rolton Oval Pavilion. From community pavilions to high-performance training centres, we create infrastructure that strengthens identity, performance and belonging, shaping full ecosystems for sport.
