Perth Rectangular Stadium is strongly focused on the human experience of sport – a complete experience from the journey into the grounds through to the immersion in the event. It is a highly legible stadium which allows for easy movement and maximum comfort, carefully utilising natural light and extended vistas into the park and horizon enhancing the communal excitement and atmosphere of competitive sporting events.
The eastern and southern stands represent a significant step towards the creation of a more urbane and socially and commercially relevant events site. The integrated concourse which accommodates numerous food and beverage outlets and other facilities has created a major new spectator hub and address to the adjacent parkland.
The spectator experience has been dramatically improved in relation to amenity, comfort, environmental quality and access to services and facilities. The design concept engages with other important but less readily quantifiable characteristics such as a sense of occasion and place, sunlight and lighting, spaces for gathering and exchange, and relationships between spaces within the stadium and outside to the park.
COX were also engaged to provide architectural services for stage 2 of these redevelopment works, in line with an approved overall masterplan concept to support the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The scope of works included a new extension to the Western Stand providing new players facilities, administration offices, press, function areas, and changing places. Aligned with this work is the issue and close of tenders for work packages that cover sports lighting upgrades to LED, LED screen replacement and upgrade, and pitch replacement.
The works have created a legacy through the women’s world cup, also enabling the continued support of local, national and international events at the State’s premier rectangular sporting ground.
