Optus Stadium Proves Its Versatility During Blockbuster Month

Set on the banks of the Swan River, Perth’s Optus Stadium was designed with flexibility in mind. And in one of the most demanding months in its history, the stadium successfully proved its versatility as a truly multi-purpose venue – and one of the world’s best.
In June alone, more than 350,000 fans passed through the gates for eight major events across AFL, NRL, Rugby Union, and Football. From the State of Origin clash between Queensland and New South Wales to three AFL games in six days – and the long-anticipated return of the British and Irish Lions – the schedule was relentless, but the stadium rose to the occasion every time.

Designed by COX in collaboration with Hassell and HKS, the venue combines cutting-edge adaptability with architectural beauty. Its bronze façade – inspired by the Western Australian landscape – and sweeping river-edge setting have earned global acclaim and contributed to earning the title of World’s Most Beautiful Sporting Facility by Prix Versailles, and Project of the Year at the Stadium Business Awards.
The team “led the unique design solutions for a ‘fan-first’ outcome across all event types. As a result, the stadium has been rated as one of the best in Australia by our patrons,” said Optus Stadium CEO Mike McKenna. The stadium has also transformed the Burswood Peninsula, turning a once-underutilised pocket of Perth into a vibrant destination.

Closing out the month was one of the biggest events in international Rugby – the British and Irish Lions Tour. Returning to Australia for the first time in 12 years, the match between the British and Irish Lions and the Western Force was played at Optus Stadium, ahead of the Tour continuing to other major Australian venues throughout July. Among these are further venues that COX contributed to, including Allianz Stadium, GIO Stadium, Adelaide Oval, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Optus Stadium’s June performance wasn’t just a test of endurance – it was a showcase of what makes this venue great. In design, experience, and impact, it stands as a modern coliseum – resilient, world-class, and ready for anything.
