Christian is a globally recognized leader of computational design, having pioneered the intersection between spatial and user analytics with generative design computing over 25 years ago. His focus lies in creating positive social impact and richer user experiences of built environments through the application of design sciences and spatial intelligence. His work consistently shows that technology and AI provide value beyond mere efficiencies and are best leveraged for design quality, human experience and liveability.
In his early career, Christian held research and professorship positions at several high-profile European universities exploring architecture and urban design through machine learning and AI based on user behaviours and spatial cognition. He earned a PhD from TU Vienna for his contributions to the field.
Before joining COX, Christian founded and led multiple international design innovation agencies, building high-performance multidisciplinary teams. Amongst those the first professional computational design group to apply machine learning to architecture at Aedas London in 2004; the design innovation lab SUPERSPACE at WoodsBagot in 2015 and ERA-Co in 2019. And most recently, the Neom Urban Analytics and Mobility Planning department in Saudi Arabia.
His work has received numerous prestigious awards such as the Compasso d’Oro for the digital shelving system VITA, the RIBA President’s Medal for Outstanding Practice-based Research for the human-centric design methodology of the September 11th Memorial Museum in New York, the CTBUH Innovation Award for the Responsive Façade of the Al Bahr Towers in Abu Dhabi; and the Fast Company World Changing Ideas Award for AI & Data in Spaces Places and Cities.
